Nice Joe, thanks for mentioning Johnny. He was a master bluesman Texas style. Maybe cause he was also Rock and Roll he didnt get full respect in the blues. I think his progressive blues experiment was very worthy at the time. His slide playing was top notch, next level.

As Josh explained, there are so many things wrong with a Telecaster, that makes it the perfect Guitar, there's no Guitar in the world that can play every genre of music, except the Telecaster, and I've got two, nice playing Josh.

I can’t really afford an actual 70th Anniversary Fender Stratocaster in sunburst red so I’m making my own version this weekend. I’ve got a 50s neck coming with some vintage style machine heads that I’m putting on a Squire Stratocaster body.

Johnny played with joy. I loved how'd he start out a song and a few bars in would exclaim his pleasure and approval with a "yeeeaaahh..."

I've been thinking for a while of putting a humbucker in the neck position of my Tele. Does this make it even more 'the only guitar you ever need', or will I regret it?

There are many collections bigger than these. Vince Gill, EVH, Steve Earle, and many other famous guitar players have warehouses of guitars. I personally have owned over 500 in the last ten years (though I keep it to around 50 at any one time) and I’m nobody and not wealthy. When you trade, sell, and bargain buy you can accumulate quality instruments easily.

The live acoustic version of “Big love” was truly the acoustic version of “eruption” for me as well. My dad and I both recorded that off VH1 when it came out and almost met each other on the road on our way to come show one another 🤣

I own 13 guitars and play them all. If I have a guitar that I no longer play I sell it to someone who will. I don’t believe in hoarding guitars and not playing them.

I don’t believe this is a real 54. Absolutely nothing here seems correct. Even the pickup windings don’t look right and the pickup covers front and back clearly aren’t original. The electronics aren’t original. The all important internal markings are all missing. The heads aren’t original. Even the neck decal isn’t original. I’ve got what looks like a better and more accurate neck than that from an old Fernandes. The other plastics are not original. So what is original? All I’m left with is the body and there’s nothing to say that’s original, just that it’s ash. And you can even buy neck plates stamped with low numbers. Can someone explain why Norm thinks this is an original 54?

Yes the Telecaster has always been in my little guitar arsenal. At one point it was my only guitar. My goes Telecaster goes to every gig, rehearsal, jam etc. Leo Fender got it right the first time - Genius!

I agree. I have a les Paul standard, a les Paul special, a Shabat LYNX HSS, a Rivolta Combinata ll, A PRS SE Bernie Marsden and my favorite 1985 Tele with 3 pickups. If I some day have to decide on only ONE guitar...after the democrats take over and take all of our possessions....The tele is the one that I will NEVER get rid of. My dessert island guitar. As long as there is electricity for the amp that is. I'm sure that the professor will make it work, somehow.

I love the telecaster because of its versatility; it can play literally any genre of music perfectly and the look of it. It’s so..basic, yet badass. It doesn’t have the flashiness of a les Paul or Stratocaster, it’s raw as hell. It’s my favorite guitar

Johnny Winter. What a great guitarist, I first heard him in the early 70's on the "Johnny Winter And" album fantastic! I was hooked on his riffs, and slide style. Johnny made his guitars talk, and you could feel it. AWESOME! Miss you Johnny.

I never heard of Josh Smith, came here looking for info about teles and was blown away by Josh’s playing. Haven’t seen such clean, fast, and musical playing in a long time. He has a fluidity on the instrument that is rare.

That scooped-out single coil bridge thing with "just enough" gain is one of the greatest sounds on God's green earth.

The idea that teles are uniquely versatile among electric guitars is such an exaggerated meme that people just keeping repeating. People always say "You can play jazz on a tele", as if that should be surprising or impressive. You can play jazz on _anything._ Just use the neck pickup and play with the tone and volume knobs (and your amp). I guarantee you can get a passable jazz tone. Listen to Julian Lage do it on a Les Paul. These limitations are primarily in the mind, rooted in preconceived notions of what styles are "appropriate" for certain instrument types. "It's not comfortable, and the intonation is not perfect - that's part of the charm". My brother in Christ, you're delusional. Bad ergonomics and bad intonation do nothing to make a guitar "magic" or "dynamic". Sure, teles are great. But this idea that they are a magical one-size-fits-all musical solution is nonsense. It's just a meme and a self-fulfilling prophecy that has gained momentum among the (notoriously rational) guitar community.
